When you’re a busy mom you need to get things like cleaning your house done fast.
Chores, cleaning, jobs, tasks…if you have young children, like me, then the list can seem never-ending. Actually, I’m just going to say that it is never-ending.
To be fair, when your kids are older, it’s probably also unending, but at least they’re old enough to pitch in, however unwilling they may be.
Keeping your home clean when you have small children can seem basically impossible. However, I have an easy tip that really helps!
By the way…the cleaning list that I offer is a basic starter list. It is primarily for moms that just need to get the absolute essentials done in order to maintain their sanity (oh, and a clean home!).

The Best Cleaning Checklist for Moms:
When I was about halfway through my second pregnancy, we moved into our first owned home.
Our previous rental had been put on the market, and by God’s grace, we were able to buy our first home.
It was an exciting time. We were expecting our second child (our first daughter) and now owned our first home.
I got stuck into renovating from almost the first week we moved in.
If you’ve ever done renovating before, you know exactly how chaotic things get. Add a one-year-old into the mix, and you pretty much have a perfect storm.
There was dust everywhere, and nothing had a place.
I was EXHAUSTED at the end of the day (actually more like by lunchtime). I was also struggling so much with the constant mess.
As I said, nothing had a place, and it felt like there was junk everywhere!
Thanks to the pregnancy hormones, I was almost at breaking point. There’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable in your own home.
Your home should be a place where you can retreat to. Instead, I felt resentment and frustration at not being able to stay on top of the endless mess.

There was one distinct instance I can remember, where I literally collapsed into tears on the floor because I felt so utterly useless.
I was at the point in my pregnancy where I was huge. I had injured my tailbone a month or two earlier, and I had debilitating ligament pain.
My mobility and energy were very limited. It was rough. I know that everyone is different, but the cleanliness of my home directly impacts my mental health.
When my house is cluttered and messy, so is my mind.
As I was sobbing there on the ground, my toddler son came and gave me cuddles. It never ceases to amaze me how intuitive children are.
His affection was enough to get me to pull myself back together, and take the time to devise a plan of action.
Developing A Plan
So, I started to implement a different method.
Instead of trying to tackle the mountain of overwhelming jobs, I broke it down into small, achievable tasks.
Instead of spreading myself thin over everything, I chose just one or two tasks to complete a day.
Of course, I still carried on with doing the laundry/dishes/etc, but the bigger jobs, I spread out evenly throughout the week.
Cleaning the bathroom was done on Friday, ironing was a Thursday job, and washing the bed sheets was Monday’s job.
In reality, just writing the jobs down instantly made them far less overwhelming.
I’m also a checklist girl. Well, just a list girl in general. I like the satisfaction of ‘ticking things off the list‘.
It gives me a sense of achievement. I guess you could say it’s my motivating currency.
So, I made a printable cleaning list. I prettied it up, and I stuck it to my noticeboard.
It was almost miraculous! All of a sudden, I was able to maintain a clean home.
I stopped procrastinating about the jobs because it was only one or two of them per day.
It became part of my routine, and I loved checking them off once they were done (perhaps I haven’t quite moved past the toddler mindset, ha!).
It honestly saved my sanity while I made my way through the remainder of my pregnancy.
The checklist was also very handy after I gave birth to my daughter. I was fortunate enough to have my mother come and stay during the first couple of weeks after Annie was born.
When my Mum asked what she could do to help, I could just point her to the cleaning list, and it was all there.
She was happy to help, and I was sure of what actually needed doing.
As I’m writing this post, my son is almost 2 (23 months for those who keep count), and Annie is 4 months old. I still use the checklist, and it hasn’t lost its value at all.

One other tip that I want to share with you is the product hack that I use to further simplify my cleaning process.
I use a mix of half vinegar, half dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle as my spray for basically everything.
If you’re sick of buying expensive cleaners that don’t live up to their promises, or are overrun with different products for different things this may be your answer.
I use this to clean my kitchen surfaces, the dining table, walls, bathroom, sofa, carpets…and more.
I’ve found it especially good for getting rid of odours. I mean, I have 3 small kids (4 & under) so let’s just say that there are constant spills that need cleaning.
I’m also a total cheapskate and this is a very affordable way to save money on multiple cleaning products.
